Great news….somebody has visited your website. \u00a0Hurrah! \u00a0Perhaps they might buy your product or decide to use your services…but wait…oh NO!\u00a0 They are leaving again. \u201cWhat?\u201d you cry, \u201cThey only stayed for 5 seconds\u201d.<\/p>\n
If your site is not converting visitors to sales, then you might be committing one of these deadly mistakes:<\/p>\n
Search engines hate Flash driven design.\u00a0 In fact they hate them so much that they will completely ignore your site no matter how pretty you think that it looks.<\/p>\n
So what if it is clever and it contains beautiful state of the art design? Nobody is ever going to see it.\u00a0 Google is just going to skip right past your site as if you are the invisible man.\u00a0 And those millions of iPhone and iPad users who use their mobile devices instead of their desktops certainly won\u2019t see it because they can\u2019t see Flash on their phones.<\/p>\n
It is pointless to annoy Google so much it chooses to ignore you.\u00a0 It\u2019s YOU that won\u2019t get any visitors.\u00a0 Just because you can add whistles and bells doesn\u2019t mean that you should.<\/p>\n
How long do you think you have to grab your visitor\u2019s attention?\u00a0 Here\u2019s a hint: It isn\u2019t 2 minutes, 1 minute or even 30 seconds.\u00a0 It is more like 10 seconds.\u00a0 That is all the time you have, so don\u2019t waste it with such a boring introduction.<\/p>\n
Most people don\u2019t like to read much on the online, so when they first visit your website they are probably just going to quickly scan it to see if anything catches their eye.\u00a0 Why would you want to squander an already tiny attention span by reminding people which site they are visiting?\u00a0 Instead, use an attention grabbing headline?<\/p>\n
People should already know where they are just from glancing at the top of your site, where they should see your logo and a snappy tagline, or a short description of your site, so there is absolutely no need for stating the obvious with a banal \u201cwelcome to our website\u201d message.\u00a0 Yawn!<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a team of….\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe plan to….\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been in business for…..\u201d<\/p>\n
Sorry to sound blunt but. . . NOBODY CARES!<\/p>\n
Visitors to your website are only interested in one thing: What is in it for ME?\u201d<\/p>\n
If your site doesn\u2019t answer this question pretty quickly they will leave.<\/p>\n
Instead of just talking about you and your site or your business, imagine that you are talking one to one with one of your typical customers and \u2018speak\u2019 to them as an individual.\u00a0 Tell them how your product or service is going to benefit them.<\/p>\n
Every industry and business sector has its own tech speak and industry only words that nobody else understands.<\/p>\n
Try talking to friends and family about Autoresponders, SEO and long tail keywords and you\u2019ll see their eyes glaze over as they slip into a coma.<\/p>\n
If you use words, terms and phrases that mean something to you but go straight over your visitor\u2019s heads, then you are going to lose them.\u00a0 We\u2019ve already said visitors are going to scan over much of the content on your website anyway, so it makes sense to make it as easy as possible for them to be able to pick out and understand the main points from the bits that they do read.<\/p>\n
As well as telling your visitors \u201cwhat is in it for them\u201d, your next job is to tell them what they need to do now.<\/p>\n
It is absolutely pointless giving them great reasons why they should use your products and services, and then not tell them what they need to do next to get it.<\/p>\n
You need to have a clear call to action AND make it blatantly obvious what you want them to do.<\/p>\n
Do you want them to ring you up for a free quotation?\u00a0 Then tell them!<\/p>\n
However, telling them to ring you and then hiding your number somewhere on your website is another big fail.\u00a0\u00a0 If your call to action is telling them \u2018RING US RIGHT NOW\u2019, then make sure you put your telephone number right next to it.<\/p>\n
Do you want them to click on the \u2018Buy Now\u2019 button?\u00a0 Again, you have to tell them, and then show them clearly where that Buy button is.<\/p>\n
And don\u2019t try to cleverly disguise the button or link.\u00a0 Make sure that it is bold and clear enough for them to see what they need to press.<\/p>\n
Never assume that your visitors will know what to do next.\u00a0 S-P-E-L-L\u00a0\u00a0 I-T\u00a0\u00a0 O-U-T\u00a0 for them.\u00a0 Tell them what you want them to do.\u00a0 If you make it difficult for them, then they will leave.\u00a0 Yes, they probably could figure it out….but they won\u2019t!\u00a0 They will move on to the next site in the blink of an eye.<\/p>\n
