Facebook Audience Insights – What You Need to Know

What are Facebook Audience Insights?

Facebook Audience InsightsDo you know who you’re targeting with your Facebook ad? Well, that’s exactly where Facebook audience insights can help, as they’ll reveal the precise break-down of Facebook visitors.

Facebook Audience Insights is different from the Facebook Page Insights in a very important way: while Page Insights provides information on those who’ve already visited and interacted with you on Facebook, the Audience Insights allows you to garner information about prospective visitors — individuals who have yet to visit or interact with your Facebook ads or page.

What information Can You Get From Facebook Audience Insights?

Facebook Audience Insights reveal lots of different information about Facebook’s users, including:

• Demographics such as age, gender, lifestyle, interests, education level and even the number of people living in that individual’s household.
• Geographic location and information on the visitor’s preferred/native language.
• Purchasing behaviors, such as the frequency of their shopping activities and their preferred method of shopping.
• Facebook usage habits, such as frequency of Facebook visits and the type of devices they’re using to visit your page and other Facebook pages.

These are just a few of the many bits of information you can discover about your target audience. You may also find other useful info, such as which pages your visitors have “liked”, along with a break-down on three specific groups of people:

• There are people who have a direct connection to your Facebook page, company, etc.
• There’s the general Facebook audience;
• And there are the members of custom-made audience groups, such as your subscribers, supporters or customers.

How Can You Use Facebook Audience Insights?

It can be used in lots of different ways. It’s helpful for companies and marketers who want to learn more about the demographics of Facebook users in a particular area, age group and beyond.

You can use  it to learn more about Facebook users as a whole or the members of a specific group or population segment.

Quite simply, it’s all the information you need to more effectively target your Facebook ads, your Facebook fan pages and other marketing materials. The more you know about your audience, the more successfully you can target those users in a manner that’s apt to resonate with their unique preferences, needs, web browsing habits, shopping habits and, of course, their behaviour on Facebook!

For instance, if you know that a segment of your target audience primarily shops online, then you may use web-based promotions to draw in those individuals. Conversely, the insights may reveal that your target audience primarily shops in-store, so for these individuals, a marketer may opt to ramp up in-store-related promotions for this group of shoppers.

Facebook audience insights is currently found within the Ads Manager interface on US-based accounts or you can go here. The US rollout occurred in early May 2014; a global rollout is scheduled to take place in the coming months.

Make the Most of Facebook’s EdgeRank

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Facebook’s ranking system has enormous implications for the benefits social media can bring for your businesses. What exactly is behind all the excitement? An impressive little newsfeed algorithm known as EdgeRank.

What is EdgeRank?

Facebook's Edge Rank Formula

EdgeRank is the system Facebook uses to determine what stories are most relevant and to whom, ensuring your updates get posted only to those pages and people who will really be interested. An ‘Edge’ is any interaction that happens on Facebook like comments, status updates, likes and shares.

EdgeRank is based on a pretty complex algorithm, but it’s premise is very straightforward: the more popular your post, the greater the number of interactions your fans have with it, and how recent your post is are the primary factors EdgeRank looks at when deciding how to rank your story.

EdgeRank’s Ranking is broken up into 3 segments:

Affinity

“Affinity” is just EdgeRank’s fancy way of saying “how connected you are to a page or person.” If you interact with one of your friends more often than others, your posts will show up on that friend’s page. If I post on your page from time to time, it’s likely your story will show up on my page as well. The more you interact with someone, the more likely it is that your posts will show up on their feeds.

Weight

Certain things you do on Facebook have a specific gravity. Or “relative weight,” to be more technical. To put it plainly, if you post something it has weight, if your friends or fans comment on it, it has more weight. There are other variables that affect an action’s weight, including how many Likes or comments it gets. Comments will generally lead to a higher weight than Likes alone will.

Time Decay

Time Decay simply refers to how new the item is. The newer the update, the better. If you recently posted something on Facebook, it’s more likely to show up on your friends’ feed…so timing is very important.

How EdgeRank Can Help You

From the above, we can see that Popularity times Relevance times Newness = How many fans will see your post.

Quite simply, EdgeRank ensures that you maintain a strong social connection with those pages and people who are more likely to be interested in what you or your business are doing. To take advantage of EdgeRank, you must remember that interaction is a key to success. Interact often with those pages and people you want to associate with. Promote interaction not just by posting offers, but by giving friends and fans reasons to interact with you through Likes, comments, and shares by giving them smart, well-written, and persuasive calls to action.

Facebook’s New Timelines

Eliminating the possibility to have a default landing tab has been a big blow to most people marketing on Facebook. It was the most important feature for most business page owners. Not only have they been eliminated, but the new replacement cover image (among may other changes) is not allowed to be promotional. Meaning no “Click Like” or “Opt-in Below”.

Default landing pages were an excellent way to convert users into fans. Now, however, pages will have to rely on more visually captivating images – short,  sharp  ‘About’ blurbs – and engaging content. This, in addition to choosing to pay for Facebook Ads to drive traffic to their new 800+ pixel custom pages.

Do you use Facebook? Here are 7 Reasons Why You Should

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Facebook is THE hot company in the tech world that came from out of nowhere to rule the social networking landscape. Facebook’s roots wind back 3 years when Harvard student/hacker, Mark Zuckerberg started the service to give fellow students easier ways to stay in touch with one another.

Fast forward to today: Facebook now attracts millions of users worldwide. The benefits of using Facebook are tremendous, but here are 7 reasons why you should consider jumping on the bandwagon.

1. Network with friends

Your social network is no longer limited to just the people in your immediate area. With Facebook, you can locate acquaintances, and friends of friends easily.

Facebook also alerts you whenever a new friend joins, posts information, updates their profile or adds a new friend. It truly is a wonderful tool for keeping people connected and involved in each other’s lives even when miles or continents separate them.

2. Applications and tools

One of Facebook’s unique features is the widgets. Widgets are little applications built by companies and groups to provide extra levels of usability. Widgets are common to most computer users, but are fairly new when it comes to social networking sites. It’s just another testament to the popularity of Facebook that widgets are being designed specifically for them.

3. Share Photos easily

Facebook doesn’t put limits on how many photos users can post in their profiles. This makes it ideal for sharing tons of pictures without having to create separate albums or spend hours e-mailing just to make sure everyone gets to see your pics.

4. Perfect for creating web traffic

Since Facebook has become a central hub for social networking you can use that hub to drive people to your personal blog or Web site. Simply by putting your links into your profile, you dramatically increase the chances that they’ll get seen and clicked through.

5. Form common interest niches

You might have a big network of friends, which is great. But Facebook makes it easy to form smaller groups that revolve around your unique interests. Members are free to form virtually any type of group they want, regardless of how limited the interest might seem. Want to develop a group that loves goldfish? How about a group that’s against blue M&Ms? Whatever it is, there’s a good chance you’ll find others on Facebook who share your passions and interests.

6. Toot your own horn

Have you done something worth telling everyone about? Want to get the word out about your band’s next gig? Facebook is the perfect launching pad for getting the word out. You can shout out to everyone in your network, or just a select few — the choice is yours. You can even have guests RSVP on the Facebook event page.

7. Privacy

All this talk about friends, networking, notifications and such might make you wonder if you’ll get any privacy at all. Who wants their entire world to be open for anyone to look at? Facebook allows you to limit who can see your profile. You can allow only those in your immediate network access to your profile and even block unwanted users.

Right now Facebook is the end all when it comes to social networking. If your friends are anywhere, they’re on Facebook.

Facebook is not only fun and easy to use, but it gives your business exposure to millions of people worldwide. Networking with friends is simple, no matter where they’re located and friends can even write on your “wall” or send you virtual gifts.
